What Should You Do If You See A Drunk Driver?

You already know how dangerous drunk driving is. Not only can it land you in legal trouble, but drunk driving also puts your life at risk, as well as the lives of other drivers.

Even if you’re a safe and conscientious driver, that doesn’t mean that others will follow suit. On a yearly basis, up to 10,000 people lose their lives as a result of drunk driving. In addition to being sober behind the wheel, here are a few things you can do if you see a suspected drunk motorist while driving.

How to Identify a Drunk Driver on the Road

Alcohol consumption disrupts a person’s ability to operate a vehicle safely and effectively. As a result, drunk drivers often exhibit many dangerous driving behaviors, including:

  • Weaving in and out of lanes
  • Tailgating other vehicles
  • Speeding or driving too slowly
  • Swerving around other vehicles
  • Braking for no reason
  • Running red lights and stop signs
  • Making illegal turns
  • Driving in unauthorized areas

These behaviors don’t always signal a drunk driver, but they can put you at risk of an accident regardless of the cause. This highlights the importance of defensive driving, which means being alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.

What to Do If You Encounter a Drunk Driver

Drunk drivers often behave erratically, so you must keep your distance. While you’ll naturally want to pass the vehicle to get yourself out of harm’s way, it’s best to hang back and observe. Reduce your speed to maintain a safe distance away from the vehicle, especially if it’s weaving or drifting.

If you can do so safely, take note of the vehicle’s characteristics. Pay attention to the make, model, and color of the car or truck. You can also note the vehicle’s license plate, but only if it’s safe to do so. At this point, find a safe, secure place to park and contact local law enforcement. Pull over in a parking space or exit into a parking lot. Do not pull over on the side of the highway or road unless it’s an actual emergency.
