What to Do If You Encounter a Drunk Driver on the Road

The holiday season is quickly approaching, which means people will be spending time celebrating with friends and family. Holiday revelry is often accompanied by alcoholic beverages, which increases the risk of drunk driving.

Even if you’re a conscientious about not drinking and driving, that doesn’t mean you’re completely protected from careless individuals. Being able to identify and avoid drunk drivers reduces your risk of a car accident, while also possibly preserving the safety of others.

Know the Signs of Drunk Driving

Many drunk drivers can be spotted by their erratic driving behaviors. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and diminishes your judgment, which has a direct impact on your ability to operate a vehicle. Be on the lookout for:

  • Swerving or weaving
  • Crossing into the opposing lane
  • Rapid acceleration
  • Stopping too long at a red light or stop sign
  • Braking suddenly or for no reason
  • Driving without headlights
  • Tailgating

Take the Right Steps to Protect Yourself and Others

If you recognize the above signs while driving, keep your distance from the vehicle at all times. Attempting to pass the driver to get out of harm’s way can result in an accident if they make a sudden movement. If possible, take an alternate route so you can safely avoid the vehicle. If not, decrease your speed and remain alert to what’s going on around you.

If you’re able to, make a note of vehicle’s make, model, color, and license plate number (even if it’s only a partial number). When it’s safe to do so, stop your vehicle and call 911. Provide information on the vehicle, as well as the location and the behavior that made you believe the driver was intoxicated. Don’t try to follow the vehicle or place the call to 911 while driving unless it’s a true emergency. By taking swift action and alerting law enforcement, you can hopefully prevent a serious accident from occurring.

If you’re the victim of a careless drunk driver, legal action is necessary to help you recover. Drunk driving accidents can cause extensive injuries, and even prevent you from performing job duties. They can also cause immense pain and suffering, especially if you lost a loved one in the accident.
