Julio C. Romero

Julio joined Martinez, Hart, Sanchez & Romero, P.C. in 2016 and earned shareholder/ownership status of the law firm in 2020. Julio’s legal career began in 2014, when he received his law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law. Immediately after graduating from law school, Julio served as a Judicial Law Clerk to Justice Edward L. Chávez of the New Mexico Supreme Court. After completing his clerkship, Julio worked representing corporations for one year before being asked to join the team at Martinez, Hart, Sanchez & Romero, P.C. Since then Julio has been helping injured people and their families by holding wrongdoers accountable for violations of federal and state law. Julio is devoted to upholding the rights of all persons throughout New Mexico, which he achieves through expertise, dedication, and true compassion for the people he serves.

Areas of Practice

Julio concentrates his practice on personal injury, motor vehicle automobile, truck and motorcycle accidents, wrongful death, children’s rights, civil rights claims, representing crime victims for sexual abuse claims, and claims against insurance companies for insurance bad faith practices. Julio devotes his entire practice to litigation and his focus is on righting wrongs against clients, whether they’re caused by negligent actions or civil rights violations. Julio also has expertise to represent plaintiffs on appeals in both state and federal courts of appeal. Julio is bilingual in English and Spanish. As a fluent Spanish speaker and writer, he is able to provide effective representation in both English and Spanish.

Julio earned his law degree from the University of New Mexico with honors, including the Dean’s Award, the Outstanding Clinical Law Student Award, and top honors in legal writing and analysis. Since 2018, Julio has been recognized every year by his peers in the legal community as a top-rated Rising Star in personal injury and civil rights.

Volunteering and Community Outreach

Julio is originally from El Paso, Texas, and has made New Mexico his home since 2004. In New Mexico, Julio has actively worked in all areas of social justice within communities throughout New Mexico. Since 2011, Julio has served on the Board of Directors for the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center. He also serves as the President of the Board of Directors overseeing the work of a non-profit medical clinic in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which strives to provide affordable medical care to all patients regardless of their financial means, immigration status, or health insurance. He is a current member of both the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association for Justice, and sits as the co-chair of the Amicus Committee for the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association.

Julio has also accepted calls to teach on a variety of subjects. Most recently, Julio taught a first-year course at the University of New Mexico School of Law, which examined law practice related topics on professionalism, ethics, writing skills, case development, and client interviewing and counsel. He has previously taught courses at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine on racism, and has been invited to speak about access to courts and immigrant rights.

He also recently accepted an appointment as a special prosecutor for the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute the cases in the rape kit backlog. Julio has also performed critical election work to ensure that New Mexico’s election laws are followed and all registered voters in New Mexico are able to exercise their right to vote. Julio is also a member of the ACLU of New Mexico's legal panel and is an ACLU cooperating attorney.
