Talk about trampoline safety and take precautions with your kids

Trampolines are intriguing for children. It seems like they have become more and more popular. Trampoline parks and businesses have popped up more and more over the last few years. Your child asked for a backyard trampoline. You can see the appeal. As a parent, you also question safety. You want your child to have fun, but you also don’t want them to get hurt.

It is estimated that in 2006 nearly 109,000 children were injured on trampolines. That number is shockingly high. You want to get your child a trampoline for the backyard, but you also want to make sure it is as safe as possible.

You will want to manage the equipment and set-up.

There are different trampolines available that cater to different age-ranges. You will want to pick the size and shape that best suits your family. Choose safety accessories when you purchase the trampoline. They make different nets and padding that offer extra protection. When you’ve purchased the trampoline, you will want to consult the owner’s manual. Make sure that you have read the instructions on how to assemble and maintain the trampoline. Choose a location that is flat and safe from obstructions.

Make rules for jumpers.

You will want to talk to your kids about trampoline safety. Make a set of rules for them to follow. You will want to make sure they understand the risks of flips. Also talk to them about what can happen when more than one person jumps at a time. It would be beneficial to write these rules out and post them where they can be seen. You may even have your child sign the rules, like a contract, to help reinforce the importance of the rules.

Cover your trampoline and yourself.

You will want to check your insurance policy. Some policies have coverage or require safety equipment for trampolines. It would be smart to understand any liability. If your children want to have a friend use the trampoline, know what is at stake.

Know what the most common injuries are.

It is important that you educate yourself on trampoline safety and injuries. Know what to look for. If you see any sign of injury, take action. Talk to your kids about these common injuries and how to prevent them. Injuries span from bruises, to sprains and broken bones. Head, spine and neck injuries are serious, and can occur on trampolines. Know how to act in case of these emergencies. Have a plan in place and make sure you practice it with your children.
