Mike is a founding shareholder/owner of Martinez, Hart, Sanchez & Romero, P.C. Mike’s prestigious legal career began in 1988, when he received his law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law. He started his practice in 1988 as a child abuse attorney, for the New Mexico Department of Human Services (now CYFD) and has been active throughout his career with organizations focusing on the legal claims of crime victims – especially children. Mike has devoted himself and his legal career to upholding the rights of the most vulnerable people throughout New Mexico.

Areas of Practice

Since 1988, Mike has spent the last several decades dedicating his practice to representing children and adults harmed by criminal, reckless, and negligent conduct. He pursues claims for persons injured by others’ negligence, wrongdoing, and abuse. For over thirty years he has sought justice and compensation for crime victims and he has been recognized by the legal community numerous times for his success. Mike’s practice also extends to representing personal injury victims in motor vehicle automobile, truck, and motorcycle accidents, slips or trip and fall injuries, construction accidents, and against insurance companies.

Mike has been listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America since 2000 and has five times earned the Best Lawyers’ “Lawyer of the Year” recognition for personal injury and civil rights. In 2018, Mike was honored by the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association for his extraordinary 30-year career working on behalf of children and victims of sexual abuse. Since 1998, he has also been honored with the AV-rating for ability and ethics - the highest possible rating from peer review site Martindale-Hubbell. Other honors and awards include being ranked by Southwest Super Lawyers peer nomination and review process as one of the “Top 25 Lawyers” in New Mexico since 2019. In 2021, the New Mexico State Bar Association awarded Mike the Justice Pamela Minzner Professionalism Award. He has also been recognized by the Albuquerque Bar Association as the Outstanding Lawyer of the Year.

Volunteering and Community Outreach

Mike has been an active member of this community his entire life. He graduated from the Albuquerque Academy and went on to study at Harvard University. After graduation Mike was appointed by the Governor to work in Washington, D.C. on public policy affecting New Mexico’s children and underprivileged citizens. After a few years Mike returned to New Mexico and attended the University of New Mexico Law School where he graduated in 1988.

Mike has dedicated his entire career to improving the lives of children and adult victims of negligence and crime. Most recently, Mike was an active leader on the team that pursued a class action against the New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department that required CYFD to make institutional changes to keep children in foster care safe. He also was appointed as a special prosecutor for the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute criminal cases against offenders who have been identified in the rape kit backlog. Active throughout his career with organizations focusing on the legal claims of crime victims, including the National Crime Victims Bar Association, The National Crime Victims Law Institute, The Children’s Law Institute, The Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, Mike seeks to use his experience and education to affect change in ways other than litigation. He has served on many different non-profit boards, including serving as an early member of and The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) Board of Directors and President of the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association and Legal FACS Board of Directors, as well as serving as a sustaining member of the Albuquerque Bar Association, UNM Law School Alumni Association, Pegasus Legal Services, the American Association of Justice (AAJ), Parents Reaching Out, the New Mexico Family Information Center, Crossroads for Women, and The Arc of New Mexico. Mike is also regularly asked to teach classes on civil remedies for victims of crime and ethics and has volunteered to file amicus briefs in the New Mexico’s Court of Appeals on important issues that affect New Mexicans’ basic rights.
